5 cups sliced, peeled Granny Smith apples

3/4 cup sugar, divided

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 tablespoon lemon juice

2 tablespoons margarine or butter

Basic Pie Crust


Toss apples with combined 1/2 cup sugar and nutmeg in bowl, sprinkle with lemon juice. Heat remaining 1/4 cup sugar in 10-inch oven-proof skillet over medium heat until melted and golden, about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally (watch carefully as the sugar can burn easily). Add apple mixture and margarine, cook until apples are just tender, about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat, arrange apples in skillet so they are slightly mounded in the centre.


Roll pastry into 11 inch circle, place on top of skillet, tucking edges around apples. Cut slits in pastry. Bake at 425 degrees 20 to 25 minutes or until pastry is lightly browned. Invert onto serving plate. Serve warm or at room temperature.
